How to Use the Word Search Generator

Choose a topic from the quick topic buttons on the left or type your own words into the word box and press Enter after each one. You need at least 3 words and can add up to 20. Choose your grid size and how difficult you want the directions to be, then click Generate Word Search. Your puzzle appears on the right. To play on screen, click the first letter of a word and drag to the last letter. When you find a word it lights up in a bright colour and gets crossed off the list. Click Print to get a clean printable version with no buttons or menus.

The Three Difficulty Levels

Normal mode places words going right and downward only, which is the easiest to search and works well for younger children and quick games. Plus Diagonal adds all four diagonal directions so words can go in eight different directions total, making the puzzle noticeably harder. Plus Backwards adds reversed words on top of diagonals so some words read right to left or bottom to top. Expert mode is ideal for older children and adults who want a genuine challenge.

The Three Grid Sizes

The 10 by 10 grid is perfect for younger children or for quick puzzles with a small number of short words. The 15 by 15 grid is the standard size and works well for most combinations of words and difficulty levels. The 20 by 20 grid is best for larger word lists and expert difficulty, giving words more room to hide and creating a longer, more satisfying puzzle.

How to Use the Word Search in a Classroom

Teachers can choose a topic that matches their current lesson — science vocabulary, geography terms, historical figures, literary terms or mathematical language. Type the specific words from the lesson into the word box, generate the puzzle and print one copy per student. The word search works as a starter activity, a vocabulary reinforcement exercise or a quiet activity at the end of a lesson. Because each generated puzzle is unique, students sitting next to each other will have different puzzles even with the same word list, which discourages copying.

Tips for Getting the Best Puzzles

Use words of different lengths for a more interesting puzzle — a mix of short three-letter words and longer eight to ten letter words creates more variety. If some words do not fit, try a larger grid size or remove the very longest words. For printing, the 15 by 15 normal mode produces the cleanest result on a standard A4 page. For competitive family play, generate the same puzzle on two devices and race to see who can find all the words first. For young children starting out, use the Animals or Colours topic on the smallest 10 by 10 grid in normal mode.

Frequently Asked Questions : FAQ

Can I add my own words?
Yes. Type any word into the word box and press Enter to add it to the list. You can add up to 20 custom words. This is useful for spelling lists, vocabulary revision, birthday names, hobby words or anything you like.

What happens if a word does not fit in the grid?
If a word cannot be placed without overlapping incorrectly with another word the tool will tell you how many words could not fit. Try switching to a larger grid size or removing the longest words from your list.

Can I play on a phone or tablet?
Yes. The puzzle works on touchscreens — press and drag your finger from the first letter to the last to select a word. The grid automatically adjusts its cell size for smaller screens.

Can I print the puzzle?
Yes. Click the Print button under the puzzle. The printed version shows only the grid and the word list with no buttons, menus or colours, giving you a clean puzzle ready for a worksheet or activity sheet.

Is the Reveal All button available if I get stuck?
Yes. Click Reveal All to highlight every remaining word so you can see exactly where they are hidden. This is helpful for checking finished puzzles with children or for teaching word search strategies.

How many times can I generate puzzles?
Unlimited. Each click of Generate Word Search creates a completely new random layout, so the same word list will always produce a different puzzle.

Is it free?
Completely free. No account, no subscription, no limits.
